Residential Architectural Design for Extensions, Loft Conversions & Home Improvements

New floor, extensions and refurbishment

Bluebell Hill - Chatham

This dated 1970s bungalow sits on a generous plot with far-reaching views across Blue Bell Hill. The existing property required comprehensive renovation and modernisation to transform it into a spacious four-bedroom detached family home.

A new first floor was added to create generous bedrooms and a striking full-height vaulted gallery landing, making the most of both light and views. To the rear, a single-storey extension forms a bright open-plan kitchen, dining and snug area, with large bifold doors providing direct access to the garden.

Although a complex project, the completed scheme demonstrates what can be achieved through considered design—completely transforming a tired bungalow into a contemporary and impressive family home.

Single storey rear extension & alterations

Guildford - Surrey

A 1920s–1930s detached property with split levels. The existing kitchen was small, disjointed and raised above garden level, resulting in poor connection to the rear garden.

A single storey, double-height rear extension was proposed to lower the kitchen to garden level while also providing headroom for a new staircase to the lower level. This reconfiguration significantly improved circulation and usability.

The new space accommodates an open-plan kitchen with island, dining area and a small snug, creating a flexible family area with strong links to the garden. A large lantern rooflight floods the space with natural light, while double height Crittall-style folding doors to the rear elevation

form a striking architectural feature and strengthen the connection between inside and out.

Rear Extension and Complete Refurbishment

Darland Banks - Gillingham

A 1970s bungalow with a poorly planned internal layout was in need of comprehensive renovation. The original kitchen was small, fragmented and lacked any direct connection to the garden. In addition, there was no clear separation between living and sleeping areas, so the internal arrangement was carefully reconfigured to

address this.

The new open-plan kitchen and dining space is modern, generous in scale and filled with natural light via large bifold doors and a substantial rooflight. The completed scheme bears little resemblance to the original bungalow, with contemporary roof geometry and smooth rendered elevations giving the property a fresh, modern identity.

The property also benefits from sweeping views across Darland Banks, which are now fully appreciated through the repositioned lounge and front bedroom.

Single Storey Rear Extension

Canterbury

A simple single-storey rear extension was designed to create a new garden room, along with an improved utility and WC arrangement. Minor alterations to the existing layout were required to provide access to the new space.

The extension features corner glazed bifold doors and a large lantern-style rooflight, flooding the room with natural light.

During the summer months, the doors can be fully opened to create a seamless connection with the garden, with a new pergola providing shelter and the potential for future planting with climbing greenery.

Garage Conversion

Gillingham

This modern corner-plot property featured a small, enclosed kitchen and dining area, with limited opportunity for traditional extensions. The client’s brief was to create a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and family space with a stronger connection to the rear garden.

The most practical and cost-effective solution was to convert the existing double garage into habitable accommodation, allowing the new kitchen to be relocated without significantly increasing the building footprint.

A modest rear extension was then added to provide additional floor area and incorporate rooflights, bringing natural light deep into the space and improving the overall sense of openness.

Multiple Extensions and Refurbishment

Rainham

This modest bungalow had been extended multiple times over the years, resulting in a fragmented layout and a constrained kitchen.

The proposal sought to comprehensively transform the property through the addition of two side extensions, a rear extension and an entirely new storey. The redesigned home provides five bedrooms—two with en-suite bathrooms and dressing areas—along with gallery landings, a dramatic triple-height entrance and staircase, and a large open-plan kitchen, dining and family space with direct access to the garden.

Despite the scale of the development, the scheme was supported by the local authority due to careful consideration of neighbouring amenity, with sensitive positioning, appropriate separation distances and a well-balanced overall design.

New Floor and Rear Extension

Walderslade

A small bungalow on a large sloping plot suffered from poor design and inefficient internal layouts. The proposal added a new storey to create three double bedrooms, including a principal bedroom with an en-suite and dressing area.

The redesigned ground floor features a double-height entrance hall with gallery landings and an open-plan kitchen, dining and snug area with direct garden access.

Although the design differed significantly from the existing bungalow and some neighbouring properties, the scheme was supported by the local authority due to its considered approach and careful attention to neighbouring amenity. In areas with a varied mix of housing types, councils will often support high-quality contemporary architecture where it is appropriately justified.

Multiple Extensions and Refurbishment

West Horsley - Surrey

A dated 1970s detached bungalow with a long horizontal frontage required comprehensive renovation, including a rear infill extension to create a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and family space with direct access to the garden.

The bungalow was remodelled to replace the original mono-pitched roof with a new double-pitched roof incorporating vaulted ceilings throughout, dramatically improving internal volumes and natural light. The internal layout was also reconfigured to clearly define living and sleeping zones, improving both functionality and privacy.

Located within the Green Belt, the property was subject to strict limits on additional floor area. The design therefore focused on maximising the existing footprint by converting underused spaces, such as the garage and storage areas, into habitable accommodation, reducing the need for significant new floor space while still achieving a substantial improvement in living quality.

Out Building - Annex / Gymnasium / Office

Wisley - Surrey

A group of interconnected outbuildings and garages were in poor condition and in need of renovation. These were comprehensively converted to create a suite of additional accommodation, including a self-contained guest annexe, a home office with river views, a car-port parking area and a private gym.

The conversion was particularly challenging as the site adjoins a listed building and lies within the Green Belt. While a number of planning concerns were initially raised, a carefully considered design approach—supported by clear communication with the local authority—resulted in a scheme that was ultimately approved.

The completed project provides much-needed family space by making effective use of existing, redundant and under-utilised buildings, avoiding unnecessary new development while significantly enhancing the functionality of the site.

Replacement Five Bedroom Home

SE London

The existing bungalow was demolished and replaced with a new two-storey family home, designed with a modern  Tudor appearance to reflect the established architectural character of the area.

The ground floor includes a spacious open-plan kitchen–diner, separate dining room, two reception rooms and a home office. The upper floors provide five double bedrooms, a family bathroom and a principal bedroom suite within the roof space, complete with a dressing room and luxury en-suite.

New-build homes are subject to stricter planning controls than extensions. This scheme was carefully developed to comply with local planning policy and minimum residential space standards while delivering a high-quality family home.
